Want to Win an XBox 360 Elite?

Posted by Alex in April 3rd 2008

Do you have a blog? Would you like a chance to win an XBox 360 Elite and a copy of GTA4? Head on over to John Cow dot Com and enter then. The rules are pretty simple, and pretty much anybody with an Internet connection can enter.

I would love to win an XBox 360, as I currently do not own one. With another console under my roof, it would greatly increase the number of games I could review and/or talk about, as well as give me an excuse to buy a widescreen TV.

Anyway, the contest is being sponosored by Top Hosting Center, so give them a look if you’re interested in web hosting.

Hey Blizzard, Bring WoW: The Molten Core to XBox Live

Posted by Alex in April 1st 2008

I’m sure everybody has seen this already:

While it’s a nice April fool’s joke, I don’t think Blizzard is seeing its true potential. Why not actually develop it and release it on XBox Live? It’s almost guaranteed that tons of people would want it, and Blizzard could make a decent amount of money off of it with little dev time invested. Give it actual multiplayer support and you’d have a halfway decent Gauntlet clone.

Just a thought.

The Wii Needs Starcraft

Posted by Alex in March 13th 2008

Hey, Blizzard? I have a suggestion. Port Starcraft (and Brood War) to the Wii. Make sure to include some decent online multiplayer support while you’re at it.

Don’t give me that look. You ported it to the N64 way back in 2000. You and I both know that was a mistake. Why? Well, to start with, the controls were clunky and awkward. Starcraft worked well on the PC because it had an input device that allowed for quick pointing and clicking. The N64 had an analog stick with a few buttons, making for slow and mediocre controls. Now, can you think of a current-gen console has an input device built for quick pointing and clicking?

That’s right, the Wii. The Wiimote can easily take the place of a mouse, and between it and the nunchuck, you have enough button combinations to make the whole thing work. You could even throw in support for the Gamecube/Classic controller for the N64 loyalists (assuming there are any out there).

You know what else the Wii is capable of? Online multiplayer. It was nice of you to give us multiplayer in the N64 version, but I mean, come on. Split screen? Letting your opponent see everything you’re doing destroys the element of surprise, not to mention cramping the available screen real estate.

Look Blizz, you and I both know that Starcraft on the Wii would be more popular than food. Regardless of the fact that Starcraft 2 is on its way, Starcraft Wii would sell millions. I mean, come on. Who wouldn’t want to sit in front of a 60 inch screen, gesturing your forces to victory? It would be awesome.

C’mon Blizzard, throw your fans a bone.

Brawl Getting Better?

Posted by Alex in March 13th 2008

I may have to rescind my earlier judgment against Brawl’s online gameplay. I managed to play a few games today with only minimal lag and no random disconnects. Has Nintendo implemented a more robust backend? I certainly don’t know, but here’s hoping that it stays this way.

Brawl’s Online Support is Pathetic

Posted by Alex in March 12th 2008

Oh Nintendo, how could you?

You promised us online gameplay, and you’ve given us a pile of crap.  Smash Bros. Brawl has the worst online gameplay I’ve seen since 1997, and it damages an otherwise excellent game.

To start with, I’m getting booted from the service about 50% of the time with random errors.  If I do actually manage to find a few people to play with, the lag is just too much to deal with.  Getting only two frames per second renders the game completely unplayable.  Thanks to the laggy servers, a two minute fight lasts about eight minutes.  On one hand, the continuous bullet-time like gameplay gives me plenty of time to dodge and make minor adjustments, but on the other hand, Smash Bros is not supposed to have bullet-time gameplay.

And what’s with the lack of options for online fights?  We’re stuck with two minute timed battles and four people.  If the server can’t find four human players, it fills the extra spots with computer players.  Why can’t I do a one-on-one fight?  Why can’t I do stock instead of timed?  It boggles the mind.

I haven’t had a chance to try friend battles yet, because honestly I haven’t added very many of my friends’ friend codes.  Because, you know, a twelve digit string of numbers is so much easier to remember than, say, a gamertag.  I hear the choppy gameplay is a little more bearable, but is it so much to ask for fluid play online?  I mean, Halo 3 can do it, so why can’t Brawl?

I feel let down by Nintendo.  This game was a major factor in my decision of what next gen console to buy.  Believe it or not, a year ago I was really looking forward to being able to play Brawl online.  Nintendo has really dropped the ball with online features, and I’m starting to think I should have gotten a 360 instead of a Wii.  Wii games, with only a few notable exception, have been nothing but a string of gimmicky minigames and poorly done ports, and it’s really getting tiring.

Way to go Nintendo.

Brawl: First Impressions

Posted by Alex in March 11th 2008

I’ve been playing Brawl…a lot. Pretty much any spare time I have is being dedicated to unlocking everything I can. Even though I’m not all the way done with it yet, I thought I’d share my first impressions of the game:

Good

  • Subspace Emissary is long. Very long. Almost like a legitimate single player game. It puts Melee’s adventure mode to shame.
  • Final smashes are awesome.
  • The new characters are interesting. King Dedede hits like a nuke, but is extremely slow. Lucario is everything Mewtwo should have been. ROB is awesome.

Neutral

  • The new stages range in quality from awesome to horrible. I can see a lot of people intentionally avoiding some of them.
  • Some of the enemies in Subspace Emissary make you want to throw your controller through the TV.
  • There’s no point in using a Wiimote if you have a Gamecube controller. I’m sticking with my trusty Wavebird.
  • Character control feels less fluid than it did in Melee. Maybe its just me, but I think everybody feels a lot more ‘floaty’ than before.
  • You can unlock demo versions of Virtual Console games, that let you try the game for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Nintendo, that’s pretty low. I don’t see why anybody would try to use one of the most anticipated games in years as a marketing vehicle for games that came out a decade ago.

Bad

  • Online support. There never seems to be anybody in the random battle rooms, and even if you manage to find somebody to play against, the lag and choppiness renders the game unplayable. Someday, I’m hoping that Nintendo will catch up with Microsoft and Sony in the online world.

Overall, I’m pretty happy with the game, and I’m looking forward to unlocking everything.

Get Behind Me Doctor!

You know, I always wondered if the Medic and the Heavy had a ’special’ relationship. Audio not safe for work.

Atari to be Sold?

Posted by Alex in March 7th 2008

Gameindustry.biz is reporting that Infogrames is offering to buy out the remainder of Atari’s stock. The former video game king’s stock is so low that Infogrames is only offering $1.68 per share. Atari execs have never been known for making good decisions, but hopefully they’ll just bite the bullet and sell the company.

Good riddance Atari. Your history is potholed with fantastically bad business moves and colossal screwups. It takes a special kind of stupid to go from king to jester. At least now your one remaining useful piece of intellectual property (the Dragonball franchise) can have a chance to be something other than mediocre fighting games.

Gary Gygax Tribute Comics

Posted by Alex in March 7th 2008

The recent death of Gary Gygax has triggered a wave of saddness from gamers around the globe, and for good reason. Think of all the dungeon-crawlers you’ve ever played: Diablo, Elder Scrolls, World of Warcraft, etc. Would any of those games have been created if not for the invention of Dungeons and Dragons? I highly doubt it.

Here are a few tributes to Gary Gygax, done in webcomic form:

  • Dueling Analogs
  • Giant In the Playground
  • xkcd
  • Penny Arcade

RIP Gary. Without you, RPGs and Dungeon Crawlers would have never existed.

Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem is the Scariest Game Ever

Posted by Alex in March 4th 2008
Eternal Darkness

Up until now, I’ve never been scared by a game. Sure, I’ve been startled before (Resident Evil 4 Regenerators anybody?), but never actually scared. That is, until I rented Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. This little gem came out in 2002, and I didn’t catch it back then so I’m glad I have a Wii. The game is downright unnerving, this scene in particular:

Imagine that you’re sitting in a dark room, at night, with the volume up, and then you see that. I was not amused.
