I’ve been playing Brawl…a lot. Pretty much any spare time I have is being dedicated to unlocking everything I can. Even though I’m not all the way done with it yet, I thought I’d share my first impressions of the game:
Good
- Subspace Emissary is long. Very long. Almost like a legitimate single player game. It puts Melee’s adventure mode to shame.
- Final smashes are awesome.
- The new characters are interesting. King Dedede hits like a nuke, but is extremely slow. Lucario is everything Mewtwo should have been. ROB is awesome.
Neutral
- The new stages range in quality from awesome to horrible. I can see a lot of people intentionally avoiding some of them.
- Some of the enemies in Subspace Emissary make you want to throw your controller through the TV.
- There’s no point in using a Wiimote if you have a Gamecube controller. I’m sticking with my trusty Wavebird.
- Character control feels less fluid than it did in Melee. Maybe its just me, but I think everybody feels a lot more ‘floaty’ than before.
- You can unlock demo versions of Virtual Console games, that let you try the game for 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Nintendo, that’s pretty low. I don’t see why anybody would try to use one of the most anticipated games in years as a marketing vehicle for games that came out a decade ago.
Bad
- Online support. There never seems to be anybody in the random battle rooms, and even if you manage to find somebody to play against, the lag and choppiness renders the game unplayable. Someday, I’m hoping that Nintendo will catch up with Microsoft and Sony in the online world.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with the game, and I’m looking forward to unlocking everything.
